AMIGURUMI DESIGNER INTERVIEW

A sneak peek video about the interview, click play to watch! Follow my Youtube Channel for free amigurumi tutorials and many interesting videos

 1. Please, tell us a little about yourself and your designs.

Hi. My name is Natalia and I’m a mum of two girls: Anastasia and Maria. I’m a crochet pattern designer and animal lover. I learned crocheting at school, but never really love it so much as last five years. So I crochet every day and now crochet is my big love, power, and relaxation.

2. How long have you been crocheting?

I started to learn crocheting in school. We were making some tablecloths, collars and home decoration things. After some years I came back to this hobby, and I absolutely can say now it’s more than work and hobby, it’s my power and anti-stress for every day.

3. Do you have other hobbies?

’m a book and garden lover. I try to find some times for these hobbies too

4. Where do you usually get inspiration from for your designs?

All my inspiration is going from the internet, kid’s books and toys

5. Tell us about your happiest moment since you became an amigurumi designer?

My happiest moment was 3 years ago, my little giraffe toys were chosen as a monthly project of May Ami-Along. You ask me, what’s the Ami-Along. It’s a fun project from @Amigurumicom, where a large group of crocheters make the same project during a limited time.

6. What is the most struggle that you have faced during your design career?

I think I didn’t have struggled moments in my career. Of course, sometimes I can’t crochet some parts of a toy, I can’t do it. In that way, I just leave it for a few days or weeks to find another solution.(Joy: You are so lucky)

7. How did you start to be a professional designer and treat the hobby as a business?

It came naturally to me through the years. I make amigurumi and promote my designs on social media. That’s all, I don’t have a special strategy for my business. Of course, I try to work every day. That means, not only crochet the toys but make the beautiful photos make one or two posts per day on Instagram and Facebook page.

8. What is your strategy to grow a design business? How did you start to promote yourself and which platform?

I do it in via Instagram and Facebook. Very important for social media, you shouldn’t disappear for a long time (one or more weeks). Visit your page one-two times of the day, talk with people via comments, and promote your works every day, run on the giveaways with other designers, make small gifts for your followers as free patterns…

.

9. I saw that you have tons of sales on Etsy and other platforms, what you think is the main factor that leads to your success today?

I think these few rules would help you to have good sales on Etsy: the uniqueness of your design, the easy and great writing and understanding of your patterns, beautiful pictures, sales and actions, promotion on social media…

10.  You are famous right now, but I know that it would be a long story behind with all the effort and of course, luck! What is your advice for people who want to be a designer and live with a career?

Believe in yourself and your designs. Make a plan, know what you want to achieve and what you have to do, and go for it with small steps.

Thank you so much, Natalia, for a great interview. I feel so grateful to have this opportunity to talk with you and have valuable lessons from your experiences.

Hard working will pay back , do you think the same? Comment below and let me know!

SOME FACTS ABOUT SNAKE PEOPLE

People born in the Year of the Snake are deep. They say little and possess great wisdom. They never have to worry about money; they are financially fortunate. Snake people are often quite vain, selfish, and a bit stingy. Yet they have tremendous sympathy for others and try to help those less fortunate.

Snake people tend to overdo since they have doubts about other people’s judgment and prefer to rely on themselves. They are determined in whatever they do and hate to fail. Although calm on the surface, they are intense and passionate. Snake people are usually good-looking and sometimes have martial problems because they are fickle. They are most compatible with the Ox and Rooster.

Amigurumi snake is a lovely gift to make for people who were born in June or any the year of Snake (1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013, 2025).

Highly recommend this creator. Designs are so well explained, and patterns are very easy to follow with plenty of guidance. The seller herself is super friendly and happy to help. One of my favorite places to shop for patterns ♥️ (Kiki the Axolotl pattern)

A GEMINI CROCHET DOLL FOR GEMINIS

I really had fun when designed Gemini, not because that it is my zodiac sign, but the process of how to create a “twin” in 1 doll. I really loved the idea of 2 characters in 1 person, because I found myself like that. Or maybe all Geminis like that. 🙂 As you see, I tried to melt 2 colors into 2 halves of the doll. I hope you like her.

I also like Pippi Longstocking, the little naughty girl in the famous children’s book that I read for my children at bedtime. That’s the reason why I wanted Gemini to wear 2 different shoes. The detail makes the doll look funny, right?

Like other Zodiac princesses, the dress is removable and the only things you need to sew for the Gemini doll are the ears. I consider laziness is smart, don’t you?

DRAGON PEOPLE – WHO ARE THEY?

People born in the Year of the Dragon are healthy, energetic, excitable, short-tempered, and stubborn. They are also honest, sensitive, and brave, and they inspire confidence and trust.

Dragon people are the most eccentric of any in the eastern zodiac. They neither borrow money nor make flowery speeches, but they tend to be soft-hearted which sometimes gives others an advantage over them. They are compatible with Rats, Snakes, Monkeys, and Roosters.

Amigurumi dragon is a lovely gift to make for people who are born in May or any the year of Dragon (1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024).

Highly recommend this creator. Designs are so well explained, and patterns are very easy to follow with plenty of guidance. The seller herself is super friendly and happy to help. One of my favorite places to shop for patterns ♥️ (Kiki the Axolotl pattern)

Amazing pattern, I enjoyed every step of the way crocheting it!!! Thank you so much for this design! It is definitely one of my favorites for sure (Libra Princess Pattern)

How to collect Kapok organic silk cotton for amigurumi stuffing at home

Kapok silk cotton – How to collect for amigurumi stuffing

Organic cotton is the great stuffing for pillows, amigurumi if you are a fan of sustainable products, and Kapok silk cotton is an alternate option for you. During this post, you will know about the Kapok tree, the benefits, and how to collect the organic silk cotton from the fruit, to use as stuffing. With such natural cotton that I collected from the garden, my dolls will be crocheted with organic cotton yarn and stuffed with the fuffy, soft-like-baby-cheek homemade Kapok cotton! If you have a Kapok tree around, let’s have fun harvesting the fruit and collecting the cotton for your crochet toys!

As you know, I am a Vietnamese living in India with my sweet little family. Every summer in Vietnam or at the beginning of the year in India, I could see so many Kapok trees blossoming, like the red clouds in the sky! In Vietnam, we call the tree “Cay Gao”, which means “rice tree”, and they are a typical part of Vietnamese villages. But it was the first time this year that I tried to collect the fruit and got the fibre from the Kapok pod, to stuff my beloved amigurumi.

IN HURRY? PLEASE SAVE THE POST TO READ LATER!

Kapok silk cotton collecting tutorial!

In case you are new to amigurumi, check my Ultimate guide to amigurumi for beginners to learn how to crochet amigurumi and get tips from me.

Watch the video about how to collect the Kapok silk cotton from the pod here:

<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/pspfKyczgkQ” title=”YouTube video player” frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture” allowfullscreen></iframe>

WHAT IS THE KAPOK TREE?

Kapok is also known as the Java cottonJava kapoksilk-cotton or samauma. A tropical tree native to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, northern South America, and to tropical west Africa, Kapok Tree or Ceiba pentandra, is now a widely cultivated in Southeast Asia for its seed fibre. It is fast growing and reaches up to 70 m in height and 3 m in trunk diameter. The trunk is buttressed and large simple thorns, similar to that of on many of the larger branches, are found on it. The crown is thin and pagoda shaped. The leaves are palmate, with 5 to 9 leaflets each.

Kapok produces several pods that contain seeds covered by fibre. Kapok fibre is yellowish in colour, light, very buoyant, water resistant, resilient, but very flammable. It is used as stuffing in mattresses, pillows, etc. The seed of kapok yields oil that is used in making soap and as fertiliser. The seed is edible either raw or cooked (roasted and ground into powder).

Tender leaves, buds, and fruits are eaten like Abelmoscheus moschatus or okra. The flowers are blanched and eaten with chilli sauce; dried stamens are added to curries and soups. Bark decoction, on the other hand, is used as a diuretic, aphrodisiac, and as treatment for headache and diabetes. Kapok, in general, is used medicinally for fever, spasms, and bleeding. Different plant parts have a wide range of medicinal functions as well.

[mailerlite_form form_id=7]

THE BENEFIT OF THE KAPOK FIBER

As Wikipedia, The Kapok fibre is light, very buoyant, resilient, resistant to water, but very flammable. The process of harvesting and separating the fibre is labor-intensive and menial. It is difficult to spin, but is used as an alternative to down as filling in mattresses, pillows, upholstery, zafus, and stuffed toys such as teddy bears, and for insulation. It was previously much used in life jackets and similar devices until synthetic materials largely replaced the fibre. The seeds produce an oil that is used locally in soap and can be used as fertilizer.

Using silk cotton from Kapok tree as amigurumi stuffing has some significant befenits that you might want to know (as dengarden.com)

  • Non-Toxic and Chemical-Free: Kapok fibre does not need to be treated with chemicals to make it safe or healthy for use, as it is naturally healthy and safe. Thus, kapok is a 100% natural and organic fibre.
  • Naturally Hypoallergenic: Kapok fib is naturally hypoallergenic, anti-microbial, and dust mite resistant. The kapok fibre naturally repels moisture, making it unsuitable for mold, mildew, and bacteria to thrive in.
  • Durable and Washable: Kapok fibres are strong and can last for a long time. Every month or so, put the kapok pillow/amigurumi out in the sun. They can also be washed easily.
  • Eco-Friendly: Kapok is one of the few sustainable rainforest products that is 100% organic and does not have adverse effects on the environment in its growing, production, and by its product.

Now I am sure that you want a Kapok silk cotton pillow or mattress in the house, but if you just have some fibre like me, amigurumi stuffing is an option! It will be a great organic gift for the newborn baby with organic cotton yarn and naturual stuffing.

HOW TO COLLECT KAPOK COTTON FOR AMIGURUMI STUFFING AT HOME?

  1. Collect the dry fruits from the tree. You can easily pick up the fruits that dropped onto the ground. Me and my kids collected them like that. By shaking the tree, a lot of well-dry fruits fall down.
  2. Prepare: A big bag for the fibre and a container for the seeds.
  3. Turn off your fan, or sit at the wind-block place, you don’t want to run after the fibre all the time.
  4. Wear your mask, because you might sneeze sometimes with the fibre in your nose! 🙂
  5. Open the pod, take small amount of the fibre, remove the seeds.
  6. Use the fibre to stuff your amigurumi! Yeahhh

Tada, done! Collecting enough fibre to stuff a mattress or pillows is not easy, but after just 30 mins and 15 fruits, I and my children could collect enough cotton to stuff a Zodiac Princess. Not too much, right? Actually it was a great summer activity for my kids when they were all at home! Have fun, and be useful, cool, isn’t it?
