Welcome back to CoCrochet Tour – Month 2, the Designer Interview series throughout 2021, featuring 12 famous amigurumi designers. Who we are gonna meet today? Let me introduce to you Baiba – the talented designer behind Lil Crochet Love! Read the interview to know more about her and the motivation being a hot seller on Etsy! Plus, grab her beautiful Donut patterns for Free as her gift to my readers!
Let’s have a talk with Baiba, and know more about her and her design career!
AMIGURUMI DESIGNER INTERVIEW
1. Please, tell us a little about yourself and your designs.
My name is Baiba and I am the creator and designer of @LilCrochetLove. I am a mom of two, boy and girl and I love crafts.
I started my business 5 years ago, that time I was living in Ireland, but in 2019 we came back to Latvia and now we are living in my childhood home. I love kawaii designs, sometimes when I am looking for inspiration, I just look at the cute kawaii pictures on Pinterest for some cute ideas.
2.How long have you been crocheting?
I always have a big passion for crafts, especially crochet. My grandmother taught me to knit/crochet when I was a small child I was left in her care while both of my parents worked.
I remember my first project was a blanket for my barbie doll. I crocheted my first amigurumi when I was 7 months pregnant with my boy, it was a monkey with big round ears, found the tutorial on YouTube, rewrote the pattern to my notebook and that’s where it all started. My boy was born in summer 2015 and when we came home from the hospital there were 3 cute amigurumi animal toys waiting for him in a crib.
3.Why crochet? What is it that interests you?
Crocheting is good for your body as well as being a mood lifter and stress relief. Especially for wintertime, for those long dark evenings, what could be better than sitting in a comfy chair, feet up and with your crochet project in your hands. Sometimes I knit as well, but crocheting is really what I like the most.
4.Where do you usually get inspiration from for your designs?
I get my inspiration from my children, from cartoons they are watching, from nature, also from other amigurumi designers. Most important for my designs is beautiful color combinations and cute kawaii inspired faces.
5.Tell us about your happiest moment since you became an amigurumi designer?
My happiest moment was my first sale on Etsy, I remember I was cooking dinner and heard a Cha-Ching sound from my phone, I was so happy that I was dancing around my apartment and burned my dinner. 😀
Also, a very happy moment that boosted my business a lot was when a popular Facebook page shared my Octopus pattern and I got loads of sales on Etsy.
6.What is the most struggle that you have faced during your design career?
The hardest part was and still is to find time for crochet because the house requires a lot of work and if you have two small children who need a lot of attention, then finding time is even more difficult.
7.How did you start to be a professional designer and treat the hobby as a business?
I wouldn’t call myself a professional designer, because I’m still learning a lot, learning how to run my own business, I think I’m just lucky that I can earn by doing what I really like.
I started to see my hobby as a business when my family and friends were passionate about my work and inspired me to open my Etsy shop and of course when people from all over the world started to show interest in my products.
8.What is your strategy to grow a design business? How did you start to promote yourself and which platform?
The first thing I created was Instagram and Facebook business pages, I started putting pictures of my works, followers and interest appeared, then I opened an Etsy store.
It is very important to advertise your business on as many platforms as possible. The Pinterest platform also helped my business grow a lot, every time I put in a new product, I immediately pin it to Pinterest.
As a good friend told me, each product has its own buyer, and how will the buyer find it if it is not advertised?
9.I saw that you have tons of sales on Etsy and other sales platforms, what you think is the main factor that leads to your success today?
In my opinion, the most important thing in online business is good quality pictures, bright, colorful, and without special filters that would deceive people.
For beginners who start selling Etsy products, I recommend finding and joining Facebook groups where people share tips on how to successfully start a business on Etsy. For me, it was a Facebook group called “Handmade is better with Kendra Goodrich – Help for Etsy sellers and makers”.
10.You are famous right now, but I know that it would be a long story behind with all the effort and of course, luck! What is your advice for people who want to be a designer and live with a career?
I simply wish people never give up and believe in themselves and their talents!
Bye Baiba and thanks a lot for your interview. I hope you enjoyed the interview as much as I did. And yes, I also wish you, who want to become a crochet designer, or want to start your own business, never give up and believe in yourself!
In case you are new to amigurumi, check my Ultimate guide to amigurumi for beginners to learn from scratch this beautiful art!

SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT OX PEOPLE
People born in the Year of the Ox are patient, speak little, and inspire confidence in others. They tend, however, to be eccentric, and bigoted, and they anger easily. They have fierce tempers and although they speak little when they do they are quite eloquent.
Ox people are mentally and physically alert. Generally easy-going, they can be remarkably stubborn, and they hate to fail or be opposed. They are most compatible with Snake, Rooster, and Rat people.
Amigurumi ox is a lovely gift to welcome 2021 – the year of Ox or to make for people born in February or any the year of Ox (1913, 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021). Handmade is the best way to tell your beloved people: I love you!
Highly recommend this creator. Designs are so well explained, and patterns are very easy to follow with plenty of guidance. The seller herself is super friendly and happy to help. One of my favorite places to shop for patterns ♥️ (Kiki the Axolotl pattern)

Amazing pattern, I enjoyed every step of the way crocheting it!!! Thank you so much for this design! It is definitely one of my favorites for sure (Libra Princess Pattern)

INSPIRATION FOR THE DESIGN: AQUARIUS PRINCESS
Well, since I have started to design amigurumi, I always want to try with amigurumi doll, but somehow so far I just designed few dolls. Then at the end of 2020, while I was working for the Chinese Zodiac animals, I thought it was a great idea if I picked up the theme “Zodiac”. That was how the idea of 12 Zodiac Princess Amigurumi popped up.
I was looking for the “Chibi” outlook for my princess, and found this awesome photo. My design for Aquarius Princess Crochet Doll was based on the photo. Same same, but different, right?
In 2021, every month I will release a new doll according to the Zodiac sign calendar. This month is Aquarius, Aquarius is known for being progressive, idealistic, intelligent, and highly creative—not to mention a little quirky! But there’s a lot more to the Aquarius personality than just this, of course. And my Aquarius Princess is sweet and adorable.
Along with the Aquarius amigurumi doll, another Zodiac sign to make is the Vietnamese zodiac Mouse amigurumi. The cutest mouse for the birthday gift!

The pattern was tested by lovely Yetty from the Instagram Handle Faye_crochet. During the test, we faces some small problems with the top and dress. Due to the differences of the yarn, Yetty needed to adjust a bit to make the top smaller and the dress shorter.
If the same issuse occurs to you, make sure that you use the same yarn weight for the Aquarius doll, or simply adjust a bit to fit with your doll.
In case you need help, contact me @anvisgranny on Instagram.

As an amigurumi designer since 2019, I have some of my favorite designers that I always admire and love the amigurumi design from them. Today it is my pleasure having a chance to interview my idol – Erinna Lee from Little Aqua Girl. Let’s talk with her about her journey to becoming a famous crochet designer and learn from her previous advice. Especially, thanks to Erinna, there is a special coupon of 21% discount for all her patterns in her Etsy shop, only in a limited time, curated for you, my readers and supporters!
Let’s look at the interview and her valuable advice for crocheter who wanna be designer.
AMIGURUMI DESIGNER INTERVIEW
1. Please, tell us a little about yourself and your designs.
My name is Erinna Lee and I am an Australia-based designer who goes by the name of @littleaquagirl on Instagram.
I love designing amigurumi patterns and sell these through two main avenues – my Etsy shop The Little Hook Crochet, as well as through the website AmigurumiPatterns.net.
Together with AmigurumiPatterns.net, I published my very first amigurumi pattern book, Amigurumi Treasures, in 2019 and am looking to bring out my second book, Amigurumi Treasures 2, in 2021.
2.How long have you been crocheting?
I started crocheting in mid-2014 and am basically self-taught with the help of online tutorials, YouTube and books.
3.Why crochet? What is it that interests you?
I was looking for something to do outside of work, mainly as a way for letting the mind take a break from the sometimes stressful demands of one’s job. I have always loved getting out and pursuing physical activities, but at the same time, I wanted to find something that would allow me to tap into my creative side.
From a very young age, mum instilled a love for crafts in my sister and me, so it seemed a natural outlet to look for a new craft to learn. In fact, mum and I both discovered amigurumi at about the same time. She makes beautifully finished dolls for sale through her Etsy shop Bubbles And Bongo.
Crochet is attractive as it offers a great blend of algebra (I am a scientist by day so this attracts me) and artistry. It offers so many possibilities to create shapes using just a simple repertoire of stitches. I think this makes it very accessible to many.
4.Where do you usually get inspiration from for your designs?
I love the kawaii design aesthetic and I am inspired a lot by illustrators of children’s books. For example, E.H. Shepard for the Winnie the Pooh stories and Quentin Blake who collaborated a lot with the author Roald Dahl.
5.Tell us about your happiest moment since you became an amigurumi designer?
This moment would probably belong to when I held a copy of my very first book Amigurumi Treasures in my hand. The book represented a year’s worth of hard work juggling completion of the designs with full-time work.
It meant a lot to me to reach the finish line and also for the belief the team at AmigurumiPatterns had in me to produce a book of patterns.
6.What is the most struggle that you have faced during your design career?
One of the biggest challenges is having to work full-time whilst meeting crochet project deadlines. I find it hard to say no to people but it is a skill I have to learn that I cannot do everything and I have to be careful not to burn out.
7.How did you start to be a professional designer and treat the hobby as a business?
Probably the first time I felt like I could call myself a designer was when I submitted my very first entry of a mother and baby mouse to the ever-popular design contest hosted by AmigurumiPatterns.net.
It was one of the first patterns I had designed and was over the moon when it finished in third place. That pattern led to my very first appearance in a pattern book and this was the start of a fantastic relationship with AmigurumiPatterns.net (Now known as amigurumi.com)
It also provided me the exposure as a designer and I slowly started to develop new relationships with magazines like Simply Crochet. I believe the moment I opened my Etsy shop with my mum was the turning point for crochet becoming a business.
8.What is your strategy to grow a design business? How did you start to promote yourself and which platform?
I admit I still have a lot to learn with regards to marketing my work and using all the amazing tools out there to maximize my ability to succeed.
I believe in producing high-quality work and always being as helpful as possible to those who purchase my patterns as this helps develop good relationships and trust in the product that I have to offer.
I use Instagram primarily to promote my work. I could look at other social media platforms too but I think I would probably need much more time in a day to invest in these other avenues.
9.I saw that you have tons of sales on Etsy and other sales platforms, what you think is the main factor that leads to your success today?
I feel fortunate that my designs have resonated well with other amigurumi lovers. It is always so encouraging when others like the designs I produce. I think it has taken time to develop an identifiable design style and it is the greatest compliment when someone tells me that they instantly recognize a design as mine.
I wish I knew for sure what the main factor is that led to my success, some patterns do better than others. However, if I had to pick one, I would say that it is the care I take in producing patterns that are highly detailed and with as much help as I can to enable the re-creations to be as close to that advertised as possible.
10.You are famous right now, but I know that it would be a long story behind with all the effort and of course, luck! What is your advice for people who want to be a designer and live with a career?
I truly think you are being so kind saying that I am famous.
I never imagined a hobby would lead me to the place I am today as a designer and that crochet would become a small business for me.
My advice for potential designers is to firstly, just do it. Don’t expect immediate success or grand things to happen instantly. It takes time to build a portfolio and reputation.
Secondly, develop your own style as soon as you can – through your designs, your color palette, your pattern layout, your photography. I think it is important to be identifiable as a designer. Lastly, to just enjoy what you do. Don’t make crochet feel like work as that is when the enjoyment ends.
I hope you enjoy the interview! Thanks, Erinna for the wonderful adviceand your beautiful amigurumi designs. You really inspire a lot of us into the fantasy amigurumi world.

SOME FACTS ABOUT RAT PEOPLE
The Mouse is the first animal sign in the Chinese zodiac cycle. In Chinese astrology, each year is related to a Chinese zodiac animal according to a 12-year cycle.
Rats are quick-witted, resourceful, and smart but lack courage. With rich imaginations and sharp observations, they can take advantage of various opportunities well. In Chinese culture, rats represent working diligently and thriftiness, so people born in a Rat year are thought to be wealthy and prosperous
The most recent years of the Rat are 1912, 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020
