A TAURUS CROCHET DOLL FOR TAUREANS

What is the most difficult thing when you crochet dolls? For me, as the designer, I found it was the face and the hair. By choosing the right expression for the face and the good hairstyle, your doll will have it own character.

With Taurus, I was working with my friend from high school to help me with the illustration. I am bad at drawing, so I just told her to draw my idea. We used to do the same thing when we were in high school, she visualized my ideas into drawings on handmade postcards, and we made quite a lot of money that time. Such a nice memory! Now with the Zodiac Princess collection, we once again have the chance to work with each other! It is such a great feeling when we see the real doll from our imagination, right in front of us!

I think we have done a good job, haven’t we?

Taurus Zodiac princess amigurumi doll crochet pattern

The best part is while I designed, I tried my best to keep the pattern as less sewing required as I could. So with Taurus Princess doll, we only need to sew the ears and the horn. The body was crocheted top up until the end of the head, and the hair were glued with fabric glue.

Like most of the other princesses in the Zodiac Princess collection (except for Pisces so far), the clothes are removable so that you can mix and match the outfits of all the princesses. It will be so much fun!

Crochet Designer Interview – Ganchigurumi + Free doll keychain PDF pattern

There is something really amazing when you explore the crochet and knitting world, not only old granny crochet, but you can find a lot of young women, kids, or even young men who crochet! In Cocrochet tour – Crochet designer interview today, I have an opportunity to chat with one of my favorite male amigurumi designers – Fernando from Ganchigurumi. Fernando is a young fellow from the South of Spain, who makes crochet and really loves to create beautiful and articulated dolls. His works are too adorable to miss, with full of vibrant and fabulous dolls to make!

Gratefully, at the end of the interview, Fernando has a cute, small doll keychain for us as a special gift from him!

AMIGURUMI DESIGNER INTERVIEW

A sneak peek video about the interview, click play to watch! Follow my Youtube Channel for free amigurumi tutorials and many interesting videos

 1. Please, tell us a little about yourself and your designs.

My name is Fernando and I am a boy who crochets and designs cute and articulated dolls, everything inspired by Japanese culture and folklore. Manga and anime are a huge source of inspiration, but Disney too.

2. How long have you been crocheting?

I started crocheting in May of 2015, so almost 6 years ago. I learned from my mom to make granny squares for a blanket, but soon I saw an amigurumi on the net and knew I needed to learn how to make that. From that time, all my efforts and researches were focused on learning how to design my own dolls. And got it!

3. Why crochet? What is it that interests you?

I don’t really know, in fact. I felt an interest in learning crochet when I saw my mother doing so. I didn’t have too much to do at that time, so why not? I guess like most people, once I took a hook and saw myself capable of anything, I couldn’t stop!

4. Where do you usually get inspiration from for your designs?

As I said before, Japan and Disney are my main source of inspiration. Kawaii aesthetics really touches me so I try to reproduce those big heads and eyes, but also the hair and so on. Of course, cartoons and characters for the children (and adults too) are perfect to recreate into dolls with my own style.

5. Tell us about your happiest moment since you became an amigurumi designer?

I think every new doll is a happiest moment until the next one. 😛 Every time I finish a design and get the doll I had in mind, I feel happy and proud, and that’s the better part of this.

Please help me to share by pinning! Thank you

6. What is the most struggle that you have faced during your design career?

Absolutely, the realistic doll shape. I’ve always wanted to make a doll like that, and never felt prepared. Once I learned and controlled my skills, I started designing a realistic shape, but it’s not that easy, and shapes really try to escape from my control. Lol But I’m finally happy with the result, even though I’m still smoothening it.

7. How did you start to be a professional designer and treat the hobby as a business?

I don’t think so and every person is different. I don’t feel professional designer because I think I have so much to learn yet. It also depends on each one’s situation in life.

8. What is your strategy to grow a design business? How did you start to promote yourself and which platform?

I started on Facebook because at that time I didn’t know so much about Instagram, but now I really prefer Instagram. In the beginning, being known and making people see me were really tough. I think all of us have struggled with hashtags and the algorithm, so you can imagine. There are too many hours of “computer working” behind that and you need to be prepared for this if you want to grow.

ganchigurumi crochet doll
ganchigurumi crochet doll
ganchigurumi crochet doll

9. I saw that you have tons of followers on Instagram, what you think is the main factor that leads to your success today?

Well, as I said before, hashtags are a must for Instagram. If you really want to be shown by the algorithm, you need to choose the hashtags well. That’s why I suggest to make a list (a really huge list) with the hashtags you may use. Use them wisely, according to the pic you are showing and with the proper relevance. Avoid hashtags that are used by millions of people or in a generic sense just for follow or for like. It’s difficult to explain all of this in just a few words, but I hope you can get the point. Of course, that’s only my opinion from my personal experience, but who knows. 😉

10.  You are famous right now, but I know that it would be a long story behind with all the effort and of course, luck! What is your advice for people who want to be a designer and live with a career?

I don’t think I am famous, there is a lot of work yet to be made and a long way to go. That’s why I’m not sure what to say here because I didn’t find yet what’s the better way to live with a career. However, to become a designer, I can tell practice and perseverance are the clues: never stop trying and learning new things and techniques to improve.

Well, great crochet designer interview, do you think the same? Comment below and let me know!

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT CAT/RABBIT PEOPLE

People born in the Year of the Rabbit/Cat are articulate, talented, and ambitious. They are virtuous, reserved, and have excellent taste.

Rabbit/Cat people are admired, trusted, and are often financially lucky. They are fond of gossip but are tactful and generally kind. Rabbit/Cat people seldom lose their temper.

They are clever at business and conscientious, never back out of a contract. They would make good gamblers for they have the uncanny gift of choosing the right thing.

However, they seldom gamble, as they are conservative and wise. They are most compatible with those born in the years of the Sheep, Pig, and Dog.

Amigurumi cat/bunny is a lovely gift to make for people who are born in April or any the year of Rabbit/Cat (1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022). I am also a cat, by the way!

AND YEAH, I AM A CAT! HEHE, BUT I LOSE MY TEMPER EASILY.

Highly recommend this creator. Designs are so well explained, and patterns are very easy to follow with plenty of guidance. The seller herself is super friendly and happy to help. One of my favorite places to shop for patterns ♥️ (Kiki the Axolotl pattern)

NEW ZODIAC PRINCESS HAS JOINED

I really enjoyed the process of making the Aries doll, as usual, choosing the ideas and forming the design was the hardest part for me! I was kind of “so many ideas, what should I do?”. I found an amazing photo about Aries, but I also wanted to create Aries with my own style: little sewing, easy-to-follow so that everyone can crochet!

Another plus with the pattern is the color! I chose the color that matches the zodiac sign: red. The same as blue for Aquarius and Turquoise for Pisces.

As you see, my Zodiac princesses have some common style: a little star, a hair highlight. Do you love those little styles? Comment below and let me know. I hope you can recognize my dolls whenever you see them !

You know what? Khuc Cay is also from Vietnam, my country and she is one of my most favorite designers! Looking at her work, I found the motivation to start designing amigurumi in 2019! Frankly, it is a big honor for me to have an amigurumi designer interview with my idol! Let’s talk to her right away!

AMIGURUMI DESIGNER INTERVIEW

 1. Please, tell us a little about yourself and your designs.

I am Hoang Thi Ngoc Anh, the person behind the account @lespetitesmainsdekhuccay on Instagram 😉 You can call me by my nickname Khuc Cay (“Khúc Cây” in Vietnamese – in the case if you would like to know its exact words).

Crochet is not only one of my hobbies but also my full-time job. I design and sell my patterns on my website www.khuccay.com as well as my Etsy shop Titesmainsdekhuccay and Khuc Cay on Ravelry/ Amigurumi.com.
I also write crochet books: Sweet Crochet Friends (in English) and Les petits animaux de Khuc Cay (in French). My books have been translated into several languages.

A sneak peek video about the interview, click play to watch! Follow my Youtube Channel for free amigurumi tutorials and many interesting videos

2. How long have you been crocheting?

About 3 years.

3. Why crochet? What is it that interests you?

One day in late December 2017, I was about scrolling my Instagram feed and saw one mom showed a crochet hat for her daughter. I found it was so cute and I’d like to make it for my daughter something similar (she was 1 year old at that time).

Before that, I did not know what a crochet hook was, nor what it was used for. But thanks to modern technology and the internet, I learned the elements of crochet – holding the hook and yarn and working basic crochet stitches – all from watching YouTube videos. The first thing I made is a bunny hat. It has a lot of mistakes but I was so excited and proud of it!

Even though my first crochet project is a hat, I mainly do amigurumi and stuffed crochet toys now. I don’t like the “mono-tone” and also don’t have enough patience to make some big projects as blanket, carpet etc.

But making amigurumi is so different, I love how the increase or decrease stitches can make the different shapes, I don’t get bored with making them because each piece is small and unique, and the result is just adorable.

4. Where do you usually get inspiration from for your designs?

I find my inspiration from everywhere: the anime I watch, the small birds and bunnies I see in the park, the cat always stays along the way we walk to school of my daughter…

But what I love the most is reading children’s books with my daughter and seeing a lot of beautiful drawings there. My daughter always surprises me with her ideas and I’m so lucky and grateful to discover this world again through her eyes.

5. Tell us about your happiest moment since you became an amigurumi designer?

It’s definitely the day I received the message from the publisher for a book project. Literally, I have dreamed of it every day since I started this job, I didn’t expect it came so early to me. I didn’t sleep well that night (and many other days during the time working on my book!)

the crochet amigurumi designer Khuc Cay and her amigurumi designs in the interview

6. What is the most struggle that you have faced during your design career?

There are A LOT of struggles that I couldn’t imagine before doing this job: the lack of time (and energy like every working moms in this world!), the messy craft room, the frustration (and sadness and “want to give up” felling) of the copyright infringement. Well, I am facing with all these things every day and still learning to live with it.

7. How did you start to be a professional designer and treat the hobby as a business?

At the beginning (and even now), I didn’t think much about the status “professional”. The day I decided to design my first character, it was just like “I want to do this, so why not give it a try?”, it sounds crazy but I really thought that everything is simply doing and sharing what I love, it’s exactly what I did with my drawings and illustrations before discovering the crochet.

The more I design crochet characters, the more I love this job, more people know and buy my patterns and more working opportunities come to me, so I just follow my path.

8. What is your strategy to grow a design business? How did you start to promote yourself and which platform?

When I work with publishers or magazines, of course, we have to discuss and decide the projects together so I adapt my designs to them.

For my own business, honestly, I don’t have or build any strategy. I just do what I love and feel good about it. I believe doing what we love is the best and easiest way to show our spirit, create our style and make it unique. We are all different, so just need to be ourselves. It’s the same way I share my works on Facebook or Instagram page, I put what I see as “it’s beautiful”, what makes me happy, or simply what I want to share.

9. I saw that you have tons of sales on Etsy and other sales platforms, what you think is the main factor that leads to your success today?

I think my answer of two previous questions already replied to this 😉

10.  You are famous right now, but I know that it would be a long story behind with all the effort and of course, luck! What is your advice for people who want to be a designer and live with a career?

I don’t know if I’m enough that good to give advice to anyone 😀 But I just want to send you a message: be yourself and do what you love.

You can design what you like, be sure it does not take ‘too much’ inspiration from others (yeah, you know, sometimes we can’t see well between getting inspiration and stealing the design!). Don’t force yourself to follow any trend, please be proud because you design everything in your own ways! In the beginning, it may be difficult, you may not get a lot of attention immediately, it may not work, but it may do a big hit. In all cases, you’ll not regret putting all your heart into it.

Well, what I love about the CoCrochet Tour – the amigurumi designer interviews is we can learn a lot from the famous and successful amigurumi crocheter! Do you find the same advice from them? BELIVE IN YOURSELF! I am believing in myself too! Thank you Ngoc Anh about the amazing interview and your fabulous amigurumi designs to the yarn world!

SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT TIGER PEOPLE

Tiger people are sensitive, given to deep thinking, and capable of great sympathy. They can be extremely short-tempered, however. Other people have great respect for them, but sometimes tiger people come into conflict with older people or those in authority. sometimes Tiger people cannot make up their minds, which can result in a poor, hasty decision or a sound decision arrived at too late. They are suspicious of others, but they are courageous and powerful. Tigers are most compatible with Horses, Dragons, and Dogs

Amigurumi tiger is a lovely gift to make for people who are born in March or any the year of Tiger (1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022). I think your father – the mighty tiger of the house – will also love the handmade gift from you on Father’s Day!
