WHO IS ROLY-POLY AXOLOTL?

Tested by Lian from Lian2807

Tiamo – the Valentine Axololt amigurumi is the first design inside a cool collection named “Roly-Poly Mystery Collection” – a year-long collaboration between Anvi’s Granny and Hooked By Kati.

It is my big pleasure to work with my crochet friend, Kati of Hooked by Kati, to introduce to you the cool chubby animals each month! The coolest thing: all the patterns are no-sew amigurumi designs, which are great for busy crocheters who don’t want to struggle with sewing tasks.

And like the name of the collection, you don’t know which animals will be there There are some real animals and some fantasy creatures, but I promise, they are all cute and fun to crochet!

Each month, on the first Friday of the month, a new pattern will be released! I am so excited to show you all the fabulous animals and even more excited to see your makes from the patterns.

This month’s mystery animal – Tiamo the axolotl, was designed by me – Joy of Anvi’s Granny.

UPDATED: Earlier, the Roly-Poly collection is only in paid version, but we have got so many emails saying that they love our collection but can’t afford the premium ones. With the heart of designers, we want more and more people can crochet with us! So, from this month, we have decided that all the patterns in the Roly Poly Mystery will be FREE FOREVER on our blogs, along with other options like premium patterns with launching discount or Bundle at a saving price.

LET’S CHAT WITH THE FAMOUS CROCHET ARTIST DESIGNER

1. Please, tell us a little about yourself and your designs.

Hi, my name is Andreia, I’m 28 and currently living in Portugal. I have a Masters Degree in Architecture but what I really love and want to continue doing is crochet. This past couple of years I’ve really been doing everything I can to make this business grow and thrive, and I think slowly I’m going where I want to be.

2. How long have you been crocheting?

I’ve been crocheting since 2015 and I taught everything myself through YouTube videos after seeing a friend making an amigurumi keychain. I immediately fell in love with the craft and it’s been a really fun journey.

3. Why crochet? What is it that interests you?

I’ve been interested in all sorts of crafts since a very young age. I’ve experimented with painting, clay and wood sculpting, needle felting… but crochet was the one craft that really clicked with me. When I was little I used to collect plushies so I guess now I can make my own little friends thanks to crochet and it’s the best feeling ever.

lemon yarn creation interview

4. Where do you usually get inspiration for your designs?

My inspiration comes and goes like most artists, but in those moments when I feel the most creative, I manage to draw inspiration from almost anything.

Lately, I’ve been really inspired by animals and nature, I like to create new characters based on the seasons or events happening at the moment, but also based on pop culture like some of my favorite movies. I think inspiration can really come from anywhere you just need to be open to it.

5. Tell us about your happiest moments since you became an amigurumi designer?

There have been a lot of happy moments for sure, but most of them actually happened in 2020 which is kind of weird considering what a terrible year it was.

One of them was when I was invited by Amigurumi.com to be one of the featured designers in their Ami Along. I designed River and Rocco the Scout Raccoons for them back in July and it was such a great experience.

The second highlight of my 2020 as a crochet designer was right after that, as they were so happy with my work, they invited me to design two characters for their new book Zoomigurumi 10! It really made me feel like my work as a designer was finally being recognized and gave me a lot of inspiration and drive to continue on this path.

lemon yarn creation interview

6. What is the most struggle that you have faced during your design career?

I would say my biggest struggle has been self-confidence and believing in myself and in my skills. The crochet community is already so big and filled with so much talent, it’s very easy to feel overwhelmed by it and feel like you don’t have a place in it.

Once you’ve found your voice and unique style of doing things it does get easier, but that little voice of self-doubt can always make a comeback no matter how successful you are.

7. How did you start to be a professional designer and treat the hobby as a business?

In the first few years of my crochet journey I had already started thinking of this craft more like a business than a hobby, but not with the confidence and determination that I have now.

In 2020 I made changes in how I work, trying to be more proactive and productive, in order to see results in my business and it’s working. I’m inspired by a lot of makers and their success stories, so I try to learn from them.

lemon yarn creation interview

8. What is your strategy to grow a design business? How did you start to promote yourself and which platform?

I started to promote myself and my work on Instagram as a lot of people. At first, I didn’t know what I was doing, and honestly, I still feel like I don’t know what I’m doing most of the time. But as long as you’re happy with the content you’re sharing that’s a big plus.

My strategy is just to be consistent with my work, being the quality of my pieces or the quality of my pictures. And keep sharing them with the world on a number of different platforms.

It’s always best not to put all your eggs in one basket, as they say, and in order for your work to reach out to more people, you need to have it on display in different places. After that, there’s a lot of luck involved too, which is harder to control.

lemon yarn creation interview

9. I saw that you have tons of sales on Etsy and other sales platforms, what you think is the main factor that leads to your success today?

I think the main factor in growing your sales and business success is really the quality of what you’re selling and showing it to the right audience. As I mentioned, the quality of your product and pictures will help you sell your craft as people buy with their eyes first. And then it’s all about finding that niche where your product fits best.

Once you’ve found and established these you just have to keep working for it to make it successful. Work is always the main factor, no matter what you’re trying to achieve.

famous crochet designer interview

10. You are famous right now, but I know that it would be a long story behind with all the effort and of course, luck! What is your advice for people who want to be a designer and live with a career?

I don’t really think of myself as famous so I’m always a bit overwhelmed when people look up to me and my work. I would say my biggest advice, which is what I’ve been telling myself, is to set goals for yourself and your business. Every step you take moving forward is in order to accomplish that goal. Once you have a clear idea of what you want it’s a lot easier to put in the work to make it a reality.

Some facts about Pig people

The Pig is the twelfth animal sign in the Chinese zodiac cycle. In Chinese astrology, each year is related to a Chinese zodiac animal according to a 12-year cycle.

With a round and fat face, the Pig is the symbol of wealthfelicityhonesty, and practicality in Chinese zodiac culture. Many money pots (Chinese piggybanks) are made pig-shaped as people believe Pig invocation will bring good luck monetarily.

The most recent years of the Pig are 2019, 2007, 1995, 1983, 1971, 1959, 1947, 1935…

In Chinese element theory, each zodiac sign is associated with one of the five elements: WoodFireEarthGold (Metal), and Water. Each Pig-element year corresponds with an element and comes once in a 60-year cycle. For example, 2019 was the year of the Earth Pig. The next Earth Pig year is 2079.

Highly recommend this creator. Designs are so well explained, and patterns are very easy to follow with plenty of guidance. The seller herself is super friendly and happy to help. One of my favorite places to shop for patterns ♥️ (Kiki the Axolotl pattern)

LET’S CHAT WITH THE CROCHET ARTIST DESIGNER

1. Please, tell us a little about yourself and your designs.

My name is Mariska Vos-Bolman and I am a designer of  DIY Fluffies Amigurumi crochet patterns and Soft toy sewing patterns. I live in the Netherlands and sell my designs worldwide in my Etsy and Ravelry store.

I have made two books about sewing patterns and my crochet patterns were also in several books like the Zoomigurumi, Fantasy Amigurumi, Monster Amigurumi, and Dinosaur Amigurumi books. These crochet books are all published by Meteor books.

I have started DIY Fluffies in 2008 starting with toy sewing patterns. It is really great to have found a job that I can combine with my family’s life. During the day I take care of my sons and in the time I have left I work on my designs.

AMIGURUMI DESIGNER INTERVIEW DIY FLUFFIES

2. How long have you been crocheting?

I learned crocheting in 2008 and made two toys. The second toy wasn’t finished and it went into a box until 6 years later when I started to crochet. In 2008 my first son was born. When they got a bit older it was easier to find time to crochet again.

So I finally finished the second project and started making many more from several books. A few years later, in 2015, I started to make Amigurumi crochet patterns myself.

AMIGURUMI DESIGNER INTERVIEW DIY FLUFFIES

3. Why crochet? What is it that interests you?

There is something very relaxing about crocheting. I also love that you do not need large tools to crochet, you can easily bring them anywhere. I can take my crochet hooks to the playground, train, zoo, etc. Another plus is that I find it easier to create amigurumi patterns than sewing patterns.

4. Where do you usually get inspiration for your designs?

Animals are my big inspiration. There are so many beautiful animals in this world. My kids also help with ideas. They love animals too and have ideas about what I should make next.

AMIGURUMI DESIGNER INTERVIEW DIY FLUFFIES

5. Tell us about your happiest moments since you became an amigurumi designer?

When I won third place in the Amigurumipatterns Monster Amigurumi contest and the design was put in the Amigurumi Monster book with designs from the contest was one very happy moment.

It also makes me very happy to see the Amigurumi on Instagram that people have made from my designs. It is so great to see that there are crocheters that enjoy working with my designs.
When my kids or husband asks me to make one of my designs, I know they really like it.

AMIGURUMI DESIGNER INTERVIEW DIY FLUFFIES

6. What is the most struggle that you have faced during your design career?

Illegal pattern sharing, Some people want everything for free. But I wish they realized this is my full-time job and I need to live from this. It makes me very sad.

7. How did you start to be a professional designer and treat the hobby as a business?

In 2007 I bought my first sewing machine. I started to make toys right away and enjoyed them so much that I started selling them because I had so many. It was great to see that my toys sold quickly, but it was hard to sell more complex designs because of the time they take to make them more expensive.

That is why I start making patterns. Now I could still make complex toys and be able to make so much money from them.  In 2008 I decided to start my company and quit my old job because I love making patterns so much more.

8. What is your strategy to grow a design business? How did you start to promote yourself and which platform?

I started on Facebook, now I use Instagram as well. I have years of experience now, which also helps. Make sure you make something that is of good quality before you start selling.

Have everything tested before you put it online. Also, be unique, make sure what you make is something you designed and looks different from other designers.

9. I saw that you have tons of sales on Etsy and other sales platforms, what you think is the main factor that leads to your success today?

My designs style seems to be popular with many people, which I am really proud of. It is so much fun to see all the amigurumi made from my patterns.

10. You are famous right now, but I know that it would be a long story behind with all the effort and of course, luck! What is your advice for people who want to be a designer and live with a career?

I think I already answered this in the previous questions. Be unique, deliver good quality. Promote on Facebook and Instagram.

SPECIAL NOTE TO THE SAGITTARIUS AMIGURUMI PATTERN

Yup, the zodiac amigurumi Sagittarius doll crochet pattern is a no-sew crochet project, isn’t it cool?

With this pattern, you don’t need to sew at all! I hope you enjoy my effort to reduce the sewing task as much as I can.

And yes, as usual, shout out to my 2 talented testers, Yetty from the Faye_crochet, and Lian from Lian2807. With their help, I have finished the Sagittarius doll amigurumi pattern the way I want her to be.

Same pattern, but Sagittarius looks so different under different clever hands, doesn’t she?
